| L&N 2-8-2 1882 Class J-4 63" drivers
Built by Alco in 1927, based on USRA Heavy Mikado design L&N owned 355 Mikados and they roamed most everywhere
on the system. Of those engines, there were 165 based on the Heavy USRA design. This picture shows the 1882 at Worthville, Ky in January, 1957 as it prepared to haul a local freight to DeCoursey Yard near Cincinnati. It was L&N's last steam run. The engine had been leased to The Carrollton RR, a short line running out of Worthville and this
picture was made as the engine waited for the local to arrive with its diesel replacement. L&N photo, colorized by J. R. Herron |
| South Louisville Roundhouse
Pacifics and Mountains occupy the tracks of the South Louisville Roundhouse. Louisville was the heart of the L&N and the roundhouse had 24 stalls. Our video "Reflections of the L&N" (item 022) shows a lot of activity at this location as well as many other parts of the system. See description on the catalog page. Photo by E. G. | South Louisville Shop, 1920's
This L&N company picture shows several steam engines in the erecting bays of South Louisville Shops. The shop built 400 new locomotives and 450 boilers between 1905 and 1923 and also maintained most of the rest of it's fleet. In 1918, the shops assembled K-4 Pacific 238 in just five days. After dieselization, this area was used for heavy repairs of diesels. The
shops were closed after CSX elected to move its heavy repairs to the former C&O shops at Huntington, WV and the shops were torn down in the 1990's. Today, a new football stadium for University of Louisville occupies the site. Colorized by J. R. Herron |
| L&N E6 750
In 1942, L&N purchased its first road diesels, several EMD E-6 units and assigned them to The Pan American and other passenger trains. It was the beginning of the end for steam on the L&N.
This picture, taken from a company photograph at South Louisville Shops, is a stylized and colorized rendering.
